Varnashram In State Machinery

Muslim Murasu, February 2012

All human beings belong to one race. All are created by One God. One is kind while other shines with talent. One person has photographic memory while another person comes by as quick tempered. Some one else is public-spirited by nature.
All that is required to get a government job is to have a degree. Desks differ. There is sea difference between desk of clerk and that of officer. British empire enforced this divide and rule policy on Indian soil. There is no let-up yet. Green ink signature, vehicle with beacon light, spacious office room, a peon placed at service, guest house with lavish facilities, these are steps in government varnashram (medieval hierarchy). Higher post is not vacant. This makes a person continue as clerk. A person has already occupied chief engineer post. This makes another person languish as assistant engineer for more than twenty years, made to serve as a slave, inspite of having adequate merit and experience. Higher post, middle level post, clerk, bottom most post, these levels bring mental differences and distorts sense of responsibility. Some people are vested with powers while others are relegated as second fiddles, slaves and cheerleaders to run state machinery.
There is no dearth of postgraduates in Tamilnadu. Candidates with MBA, MA, ME, ML degrees from universities compete for peon post. But the way higher officers are recruited inspires shock and frustration. It is required to clear examination by service commission. Immediately authoritative powers are conferred on them. Decision-making powers are given in trust. In these days of rampant bribery and corruption, working abilities and thinking prowess of those occupying higher posts should be brought to light. Higher bureaucrats strut with kingly pride. Other employees in the department are not treated with equal respect. The distinction between officer and staff is cruel. The gap and misuse of power know no limits. Excesses by politicians are routinely exposed. But the attitude of officers controlling government works with sweeping power stays out of public gaze. Bossy attitude of higher officers is an important reason why public funds are wasted. One person is having extra power while another person can work but cannot make any decision. Government offices expose two extremes simultaneously. Desk, room and signature are different in the same office. Government funds are wasted due to authority.

National Parties And Betrayals

Muslim Murasu, February 2012

Positions taken by regional parties are mostly with narrow vision. Leadership ends within a small landscape. Broad outlook and vision are not expected. Nature and dimensions of problems and their solutions vary between a population of 7 crore and a population of 120 crore.
The regional parties that march to parliament richly reap harvest from power centers in Delhi. Once the opportunity for parliament seat or central ministry dwindles, the same regional party seeks to lead people to confusion and offers all bad guidance. Solutions to problems are not going to pop out from inter-state clashes. People will alienate and stay aloof. Those residing in the state borders will be troubled.
Politicians who have lost elections and have been fled away by people and reduced to live their lives within state or district limits, are continuously on the lookout for new issues. They incite innocent people. Transportation is hindered. Bandhs and strikes are childish. This will aggravate poverty; pull down national income and per-capita income. Journalists who are prowling for news exaggerate immeasurably even minor incidents. Tamil people forget these developments within few weeks or months. Then politicians set their eyes on a fresh issue. Another three months of public gatherings, strikes, entertainment, collection, tours and theatrics.
No problem is conclusively solved. Permanent solutions are not in sight. High courts and Supreme Court overreaches into administrative limits. Stay orders and solutions offered do not bring back peace. Issues are put in back-burner.
These days when globalization is inexorably penetrating deep, it is essential to have water treated and recycled. Rains falling on the state should be adequately retained. Rainwater harvesting should be effectively implemented. Drip irrigation and dry land irrigation can be beneficial. River water sharing has been causing conflicts between various countries in the world. Water sharing between states is distorting and threatening national outlook. National parties have not offered appropriate guidance. They are adding fuel to fire. Big parties can act with courage and bring an end to river sharing problem.

Increasing Religious Festivals

Muslim Murasu, February 2012

People in Tamilnadu are hassled with thousands of problems. Religious messages are coming as tender breeze to their hearts. Rationalism and materialism held sway in recent years. Inflation and skyrocketing real estate prices are excruciatingly painful. Elders are not respected. Television and films engage youngsters. Nuclear families are on the rise. No one knows any escape from heart-wrenching problems. Spirituality, advices, religious festivals and meditation programs prove to be beneficial and curative. Religious aversion is giving way to religious fervor. New religious centers are sprouting cutting across all religions. People having trust in God will not be forsaken. Passion for religion is again starting to dominate in the hearts of Tamil people.

Religiosity, religious preaching and spending from different religious sections should alleviate poverty. Ancient elders created lakes and planted trees. They constructed community halls and feeding centers for the needy. In those days, religious following guaranteed protection to human lives. Religious sentiment should not stop with slogan, zikr and shouting in amplified speakers. Poverty should not have its ugly dance where religious center is installed. Helping poor will be regarded as helping God. Religion should guarantee right to live for every creature under the sky.
Tamilnadu should lead the way in India. Energetic and passionate spiritual lectures beamed from Gujarat are reaching Tamilnadu through private television channels. It was a heartening sight to see Muslim women, unmindful of even severe cold, participating to hear spiritual lectures by scholars who came from north, recently in 12 days Milad celebrations organized in the central part of the capital city of Tamilnadu. Christians, for their part, are taking advantage of private television slots and improving their standard. Tamilnadu with its thriving spirituality will surely ascertain livelihood rights. God will shower His blessings.

Let Us Celebrate Prophet

Milad speech by Maulana Mufti Shamshul Qamar Quadri, Faizabad, UP at Walaja mosque, Triplicane, Chennai
Published in Muslim Murasu, February 2012

Lakhpathi, Crorepathi, landlord, king, each one has his status and position. They spend and donate according to their strengths. God has given Prophet to the entire world and all the creations. Groom occupies the most important position in wedding ceremony (baraath). He is the center of attraction amid all decorations, drinks and feast. Quran says, “kath ja akum minallahi noor”. A light has come from Allah.
There are some reservations in some quarters about celebrating Milad. A person without child will be happy even if he begets a handicapped one. You will understand if you know the plight of couples who have not sired a child even after long time. They will consider child as a big fortune. God has given many Nihmath (bounty) in our body. Any problem in legs can make us limp. We will be given various titles like blind, deaf and dumb if our organs are not working. A disruption in balance of mind will make us mad. Sight, hearing, speech, all these are bounties. Prophet is guidance for the entire world. “Lakadh mannallaha alal moomineena izba’asha feehim rasoolan” – It is Allah’s greatest favor to send Prophet among us. You are celebrating other fortunes that you get in earth. Rabiul Awwal 12th day is when Allah bestowed His greatest favor in the form of Prophet. We can feel pride to celebrate this.
Quran has declared that Allah won’t send down azaab (penalty) on a community when Prophet is among them. A community that accepts Prophet’s words and deeds and embraces his guidance will be spared from punishment. Earlier communities have been changed into swines and monkeys. But Allah has not sent down such penalty after Prophet has arrived as a human being. Human form also has become honorable. Human beings are the best of all creations. Prophet Ibrahim (alai) declined to worship creations. Quran says, “Karramna bani adama” – We have honored the children of Adam. Adam was created from mud. Ruhu is Allah’s Hukm (command). Mud and Ruhu are totally two different things. How will they mix? “Yasalunaka anir ruhi kul roohu min amri rabbi”.

Failure Reminds Of Allah

Darse Quran by Maulana Syed Rizwan Pasha Quadri at Masjide Shujath, Tolichowki, Hyderabad
Published in Muslim Murasu, February 2012

Surah 4, Nisa, Rukoo 5. Here God speaks about our Islah (refinement). “Yuridullah”. Allah’s Wish will certainly succeed. Humans can plan, but cannot be sure about result.
Once two persons came to Ali (rali). One person said that everything is under God’s control and men are capable of nothing. Another person argued that men have been vested with all capabilities. Ali (rali) asked him to raise one leg. Then he asked him to raise the other leg too. “I will fall down”. Ali (rali) explained that human beings can achieve some things but not everything.
“Vama thashaunna illa yasha Allah”. Your plans can go in vain. Allah’s Will is sure to be fulfilled. “Fa iza azamtha fathavakkal alallah” – once you decide, place your trust in Allah. Once Ali (rali) was asked about how he knew Allah. Intimacy with Prophet made me know Allah. I failed many times to achieve what I desired. Each failure brought to my mind that there is One who has control over everything and only His Plans will be carried out.
Verse 26 – Yuridullah; Allah wishes; His wish will surely be realized. “Li Yubayinnalakum” – to explain you clearly.
Explaining Quran is not something that a man can do. This is God’s job. It is only by God’s grace that someone can teach you Quran. It is not individual talent of any person. Allah has given an opportunity to teach Quran.
Verse continues. Sunanan – plural of Sunnath. Ways and lifestyle of men keep changing with age. The style of sleeping, eating, dressing is different while going to school from while going to job. But Allah’s Sunnath, His method, does not change. It is same for all ages. It is the same arrangement for all times. Sun will rise every morning. Moon will follow its schedule. Crops and fruits grow in their seasons.
“Allah wishes to guide you in the path of those who have gone before you”. Allah desires to lead you in the ways of noble people. The obstinacy not to follow anyone is grave mistake. Many Muslims follow Prophet exactly. Following such exalted people is same as following Prophet. We can follow Shafi and Hanafi Imams. Some people are fomenting serious reservations about this. Imams exactly followed Prophet. Arguing that we will follow Prophet directly amounts to insulting pure lives of elders.
“Yathuba alaikum” – Allah turns His attention towards you. There is not a single moment when He is not watchful about you. It is not that only during Shabe Baraath, Shabe Mehraj and Eids, Allah cares for you. Whenever you call Him or return to Him in repentance, Allah answers your prayers. Yathuba is present continuous form. It applies both to present tense and future tense. When a person calls “ya rabbana”, “O God”, Allah answers with “ya abdhi’, “O my servant”.
Allah pays individual attention to each human being. He is happy when humans call Him. One need not shout or cry and create fuss. “udvu rabbakum thalarruvan va kufyathan”-call with humility and in secret. Surah 7, al Araf, verse 55. Call Him from depths of your heart.
We are memorizing Duas and merely doing lip service. Angels are not going to come jumping from heaven. One should pray for real needs. It is narrated in a Hadees that Allah extends His hands in the nights. “yamudhu yadaihi”. This is a chance for those who sinned during day to repent and return to Him. Allah again extends His hands in day to give chance to those who erred in night. We should not let our imagination run with how hand, fingers will look like. Understand the essence of the message. It is inappropriate to argue whether God has hands.
“vallahu aleemun hakeem”. Allah knows all that is in your hearts. Recite “ya aleem” to improve your knowledge. Reciting “ya kabeer” will refine character. Allah is aware of the currents and inclinations of your hearts. But He conceals them, otherwise you will be in ignominy.
Verse 27; “vallahu yuridhu ayyathuba alaikum”. Allah wishes to forgive you. Younus (alai) prayed, “la ilaha illa antha subhanaka inni kunthu minallalimeen”. There is no one worthy of worship but You; You are holy; I have become one among sinners. A person will be moved from sinners list to beloved list once he repents and asks for forgiveness.
Verse continues. “Those who follow their passions want you to drift far away from the right path”. If we turn our backs to Prophet’s Shariath, our needs may be temporarily fulfilled. But it can only result in failure in long term. One will lose both Duniya and Akhirat. Prophet used to sit and eat. This is ibadath. If we stand and eat, we will only get diseases. One should not go to bed very late in the night. But this is the new culture. Prophet’s way is to go to bed early in the night and wake up early in the morning. Deviation from this path will lead to suicides. You will cause your own ruin if you ignore the ways of Prophet.
Verse 28; Allah uses ‘yuridullah’ for the third time in the same Rukoo. Allah wishes to make it easy for you. Laws were stringent for earlier communities. They had to throw away their dress or stitch it afresh if it becomes impure. They had to worship only in mosques. But we can worship in trains and houses. Whole earth is mosque for us.
“Kulikal insana zayifa” – man has been created weak. His powers are of no match to large beasts, winds, oceans and mountains. But Allah has given all creations to be used by men. But whole human society is still pitiable in front of God. Whatever advances we make in science, we are helpless in the face of earthquakes and other natural calamities. Tsunami took away lives of two lakh people. We were speechless in front of God’s power. America claims to be super power. But they are tormented with tornadoes. Allah shows His power to anyone who claims to be powerful. Japan is an advanced country. But they could not stop natural disaster. Namrood claimed that he is God. A mosquito taught him lesson. Rich men also stand in queues for water during famines. People will be running for dry breads thrown from helicopters. Human helplessness will become obvious. Humans do not have any individual power or strength. It is only by God’s grace that a human being can even walk. Visit hospitals and see. It will improve your faith. You will find people who are in bed for months together with nothing but life left in their bodies.
Verse 29 – Do not wrongfully consume wealth. Don’t earn in sinful ways. Cinema CDs, photography, gambling, usury, grabbing should not be sources of income. Commerce is allowed. But the condition is that both buyer and seller should feel satisfied. Transaction should not be forceful with help of henchmen. Halal income is the best amal.
Verse 29 – Do not kill yourself. When a person yearns for more and better quality of life and he fails in it, he falls into depression and this becomes a cause for suicide. Prophet has told that a person committing suicide will face same death repeatedly in hell. Mercy killing is also prohibited. We should not even pray for death. When you see a person in torturous pain, the most you can pray is, “Allah! grant him what is best for him”. Men should never lose hope.
“innama al usri yusrar, innama al usri yusra”. Allah says twice. Relief is guaranteed with problem.
We should not kill others either. That is same as killing oneself.
Verse 30 – If anyone transgresses, hell will be the reward.
Verse 31 – If you stay away from grave sins, Allah will forgive your minor misdeeds. You will dwell in paradise. It is a place of honor. We have to produce tickets to enter any exhibition. One can enter paradise through honest life and pure heart. It is a place of dignity where you will see no ignominy.
Verse 32 – It is God who bestows favors. Do not covet to steal bounties bestowed on others. Knowledge, experience, wealth, all these are bounties from God. It is based on God’s Wisdom. Allah has made you above all other creations. Dog runs in streets with its tongue out. Lizard lives its life sticking to walls. Be grateful to God for what He has made you. Do not get lost in appearances. Allah has hidden many talents inside you. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was born in a village without electricity. He was selling newspapers. He rose to become first citizen of India. Verse 32 – men and women will have what they earn. They will get full reward. Everyone should truthfully do his or her duties. Ask Allah for His bounties.

Come To Hindustan To Learn Islam

Weekly Bayan at Tableeghi Markaz, Tolichowki, Hyderabad
Published in Muslim Murasu, February 2012

We are in perpetual race in life to grow further in job, business, education and economic status. We are not happy with what we have. But our stand is exactly opposite when it comes to religion. We are satisfied with our current status. Sahabas were contented in materialistic matters, but sought more and more in matters concerning religion.
Those who pray five times a day among us are satisfied with it. Some others feel that Juma is sufficient. There are people who are happy with few Nafl prayers. Duniya (materialistic position) is fixed for everyone. It is determined. Each one will get what God has destined for him. One need not anticipate more. Some people toil relentlessly hard and severe; but they stand where they are without any progress. Only average life seems possible.
Surah 43, Zukhruf, verse 32 – Allah has divided livelihood as needed. Some will be rich while others are poor. This arrangement makes one dependent on other. Donkey and horse, employer and employee, all can’t become equal. Communist dream can never be achieved. Sustenance is predetermined. Death is sure to come.
Today it is holiday. So we have come to religious mission. But our primary objective should be to grow spiritually and progress in religion. Come forward. This short life can end any second. We have to prepare amal (good deeds) and Akhirat (afterlife) in this brief time span. Deen (religion) should not be the last priority. Unfortunately, we are ignoring importance of religion.

Irthadad, to renounce faith, is of three types. One is to move away at mental level, second is to stay away through actions and last is to brazenly declare and renounce. Majority Muslims today do not give importance to Sunnath and commands. This is “Zehni Irthadad”. Next is “Amali Irthadad”. This is to fail in religious duties inspite of having good health, time and ample opportunities. Last stage and worst of all is “Kawli Irthadad”. Some people are openly declaring and renouncing Islam.
Surah 5, Maida, verse 54 – Allah will bring a new community. We do not have any special relation with Allah. Regardless of which type of Irthadad we display, Allah will replace us by a new group. It is Allah’s grace that we have got religion. We should fear and worry to move away from religion. Jews moved away from religion. Allah shifted Nubuwath (Prophethood) from Bani Israel to Bani Ismail. We claim ourselves as Aalim, Peerzada, Moomin and various other titles. Arabs started ignoring missionary works. First the efforts disappeared, then Deen disappeared. Now missionary work has been entrusted to people in Hindustan. People from all over the world come to Hindustan to learn religion. If we are hesitant to work, then this mantle will go to Europeans. Religious works became weak in Baghdad. Thatharis defeated them. Then Allah propagated religion through Thatharis.

Allah Is Your Friend

Darse Quran by Maulana Mustafa Shareef Naqshbandhi in Mehdipatnam, Hyderabad
Published in Muslim Murasu, February 2012

Unbelievers in Meccah accused Prophet as poet, sorcerer among other things and plotted to kill him. Even after Prophet came to Medinah, unbelievers joined hands with Munafiqeen (hypocrites) and sought to destroy Islamic mission. Allah gives them a chance inspite of all this. Surah 8, Al Anfal, verse 38 – If unbelievers desist, all their previous sins will be forgiven. Allah’s mercy is for everyone. He is ready to forgive even after damage is done. When files are deleted from computer, only some copies are purged. But God will wipe out all the records without any trace. Angels are having small books. Main Book is with God. ‘Indahu ummul kitab’. In this world, even after a person is acquitted, his case files will be stored for times to come. Allah can remove all mentions of the crime. He forgives when one repents. Redemption will be so complete that it will become like the sin never happened at all. We should do Tauba during mornings and evenings.
Verse continues – if they do not desist, Allah will destroy them like He did with earlier communities. Next verse, 39, prescribes the formula for us. Do not harm anyone. But donot let anyone go who harms you. Treason should be wiped out. “va kathiluhum hatta lathakuna fithnathun va yakunu deenu kullahu lillahi”. All will get justice when Allah’s religion is established. Everyone will find peace. If unbelievers persist in their mischief, know that Allah is your friend. He will help you. “Annallaha maulakum nihmal maula wa nihman naseer”. Have friendship with Allah. All your problems will be gone.
Next verse is about division and distribution of booty obtained in war. Sahabas (companions) were unaware of the rules. This was a war between truth and falsehood. All seized materials belong to God and His Prophet. He involved you in this struggle. Rules are laid down. 20 percent, one-fifth, should be set aside for God and Prophet. Some commentators explain that God’s share means Kaba maintenance. Some others are of the view that God’s share also belongs to Prophet. Sadqa (alms) is prohibited for the family of Prophet. But booty is allowed for them. This is God’s gift.

Aqeedah-e-Tawheed

Dr. Syed Aleem Ashraf Jaisi speech at Quran Foundation, Tolichowki, Hyderabad
An excerpt from this speech was published in Muslim Murasu, February 2012

Our primary objective is to set our lives according to the liking of Allah and His Prophet. Reforming ourselves is our topmost concern. If we give a speech or do some other work, we should not mistake that we have started correcting others. This is part of our training. A teacher has to learn as part of his job. We should not be carried away that we have become scholars and we are reforming others. Whatever we do should be part of our own refinement.
Sufis explain goodness and evil with similitude of crops and grass. Bad things are like grass and goodness is like crops. No one plants grass. But it grows all the same. People plant crops, sometimes it grows and other times it shows no results. One has to put efforts for goodness. It may bring fruits or go in vain. Evil grows everywhere. But goodness needs schools, madrasas and qanqas. We see that goodness is always in short supply and in shortage. This is because Allah has attached huge rewards in return for good deeds. One has to earn it through hard work. We cannot be complacent after eliminating evil. Grass will grow again and again without anyone’s help. You close one door for evil, but many new doors will keep opening.
We won’t gain anything if the whole world is on right path but we are astray. We won’t be at any loss if the whole world is on wrong path but we stay away from evil. We should pay full attention on self-reformation. The most effective method of Shaitan is to make us obsessive with finding faults in others. We spend most of our time thinking about follies in other communities, section and people. We are oblivious to our own mistakes. No doubt, we should worry about mistakes of others. But higher priority should be given to correct our own souls. We fall prey to Shaitan’s trap and we become experts in deficiencies of others. But we are ignorant of our own deficiencies. We will be held accountable to our deeds alone on the judgement day. No one will be spared on the basis that his neighbor was worse than him. Why do we relish when we find defects in others. This is because it feeds our Nafs (ego). Shaitan fuels this taste, because we will waste time in belittling others. We will forget God and become insensitive to our goal in that time. Shaitan will not attack us with Kufr or Shirk. A true Moomin is one who does not speak unnecessarily. Prophet has said to either speak good words or remain silent.
Our primary objective is to correct us. Reforming others is secondary. First step in reforming ourselves is to cleanse heart from evil and decorate it with good virtues. It is not wise to preach to others while being indifferent to those teachings. “Atahmaroona naasa wa tansawna anfusakum”.

We spend so much time in debating about Masael and are missing Farz and Wajib (duties, necessities). There is no point for a person to talk about wearing pant above ankle when he does not even establish regular prayers. We remember to take up every activity in life according to the priority and importance. But we don’t follow the same approach in religion.
Topmost priority in our religion is Tawheed. Every thought will have a base. The foundation of Islamic thought is Tawheed. This is our base. The target of Islamic revolution is Tawheed. Each one of us knows the importance of Tawheed. But we are afraid to talk about it, lest we may end up making some mistakes. It looks like Tawheed has become private property of some select group or section of the society. If Tawheed is truth, what is the problem in talking about it. Why should we ship the copyright for this to some particular group. Why are we not talking about importance, necessity and benefits of Tawheed. The base of the Aqeedah (creed) that we present is Tawheed. We wrongly yielded ownership to some others.
Sufis were called as ‘Ahle Tawheed’. They spent their life in fully realizing kalima. They went to such lengths that in their view, there was nothing left in the world except Tawheed. Sufis scaled such great heights in Tawheed. The problem is that we don’t follow their ways. But we ask Dua to them also for material benefits. Recently I went to an Urs of a Sufi. I asked how many people who have come here are aware of the life history of this Sufi. He was a king in Iran. He abandoned it and came here for religious mission. How many of us ask his prayer that Allah should make us like him. But we pray to become like Tatas and Ambanis. We declare love for Sufis but we are not prepared to tread their paths. There should not be any thought but about God. There should not be any talk but about God. Our attention should not turn to anything other than God. This was their principle. But in the past 50 or 60 years, it appears that this subject is reserved for some select group. We stopped talking about Tawheed. It became an accusation on us that we don’t even want to talk about Tawheed. We used to sing in our childhood days, ‘la maujooda illallah, la maqsooda illallah’. There is no Being but God, there is no purpose but God. Tawheed is the sole purpose for which Prophets and Messengers came to us.
The word ‘Tawheed’ is ‘to be’ verb of Arabic word ‘Wahada’. Its literal meaning is to believe something as one. Tawheed means to believe God is one and worship Him alone. Devotee should understand only one God worthy of worship. Worship, Sajda, is only for Him.
Tawheed is a tree that grows in our heart. Its branches are virtuous deeds. These are Namaz, fasting, Haj, Zakat, serving humanity, truth, honesty, faith in God, patience, gratitude. All these are branches of Tawheed. Fruit of this tree is blissful and bountiful life in paradise.

God is one. He is one in his Sifaath (attributes) and Afaal (activities). He has no equal, match or partner. He has no comparision or parallel. He is beyond comparision and pure from comparision. Quran says ‘laisa ka mislihi’. There is no one like him and even this thought has no point. ‘kaaf’ and ‘misl’ (alike) have same meaning. So it means He has no ‘misl’ and He has no ‘misl ka misl’. The thought about His ‘misl’ has no meaning.
Allah is ‘Wajibul vujood’. His existence does not fit into any time line. Allah is Vajood and we are Maujood. We came into existence after He created us. There is no meaning in the question of when Allah came into existence. Vajood is that which has existed always and will exist always. We are not Vajood, we are only Maujood. We can be created and we can be destroyed. ‘Wajibul vajood’ means His existence is certain and His absence is impossible.
We cannot know Him by our intelligence. Our mind has to encompass something to know it. For example, we have to see this microphone in its entirety to know about it. No one can encompass Allah and hence no one can know Allah through his intelligence. We see His activities and get some idea about His attributes and through His attributes we come to know a little about Him. No human being or creation, whatever height it scales in stature, can ever fully comprehend God. God has no boundary or limits (lamahdood). We can never know Him. Only He knows Himself. This explains Majesty of Allah. The knowledge of even our Prophet is not even a tiniest proportion of the knowledge of Allah. Because once you attribute any ratio, however small it is, to limitless, you make it limited.
‘la thudrikuhul absaar va huva yudrikul absaar’. No vision can reach Him. He is ‘kadeem’. He has existed always and exists forever. None other than Allah is kadeem. He knows everything. No one else knows everything. Only He is worthy and deserving of worship. ‘inna salaathi vanuski vamahyaya vamamaathi lillahi’.

Remember Seven Attributes

Maulana Syed Mohammad Raza'ul Haq Aleemi Shah Aamiri speech
Published in Muslim Murasu, February 2012

Surah 12, Yusuf, verse 43. King of Egypt saw a dream. No one in his court knew to interpret it. Recurring thoughts can manifest in dreams. Sometimes meaningless things also will come in dream. Khwab, Ilham, Kashf, Vahi, Ilqa, need to be grasped. They are inter-related. Interpreting dreams is an art.
Seven lean cows were eating seven fat cows. There were also seven green ears of corn and seven parched ones. A person in the court remembered Yusuf (alai). Yusuf (alai) had earlier interpreted his dream when he was in prison. Yusuf (alai) had said, “Mention me to the king. I am unjustly held in prison”. Now that person in the court told to the king, “Send me to the person who can interpret dreams”. He went to Yusuf (alai) in prison. Drinking was not haraam (prohibited) in those days. Companions of our Prophet used to drink in the initial days of preaching. But intoxication is prohibited in all Shariath. After the command came, drinking was declared as haraam. The job of the person who met Yusuf (alai) in prison was to serve drinks to the king. He inquired Yusuf (alai) about the explanation. Yusuf (alai) told, “You sow for seven years as usual. But don’t reap entire harvest from the field. Take only what you may need. There will be seven years of famine subsequently. Eat what you had stored. It will be but little. After that there will be a year of abundant rain and good yield”.
Seven fat cows are seven sifathe kamaaliya – hayath, ilm, iradha, kudrat, samath, basarath and kalaam. Allah has given them to us as Amanath (trust). Life, knowledge, will, power, hearing, sight and speech, these qualities do not belong to us. They belong to God. In us, naqisa sifath (weak attributes) exhibits kamila sifath (strong attributes). Death is a weak attribute. Life, which is a healthy quality, is hidden in it. Ignorance is a weak attribute in which strong attribute knowledge is hidden. Iradha (will) takes home in istharar (aimlessness). Hearing power, sight and speech are residing in deafness, blindness and dumbness. Life enters into death like bread enters into empty stomach. Weak attributes take strong attributes in them. Seven lean cows swallow seven fat cows. All beauty in life come from these seven qualities. We get relations, friends and we do deeds, all because of these strong qualities. All greenness spring from these seven attributes. Do good deeds when you have these seven qualities. A day will come when you will lose them. Your good deeds will help you at that time.

First Reform Your Own Self

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan speech
Published in Muslim Murasu, February 2012

We see from history that man has always been after ideals. Very few individuals have applied practical approach and reached exalted heights. Consider the example of Adam (alai). Analyze it with the perspective of idealism and practical wisdom. Allah told the prophet to wander anywhere in paradise and enjoy its bounties. But do not approach a particular tree or have its fruits. Adam and Hawwa ate that forbidden fruit. They were exiled from paradise.
Full paradise is for me. I have rights over this tree as well. I won’t accept any restriction. This was the ideal. But what could have been the practical wisdom? I have been granted the full paradise. This is enough for me. One forbidden tree does not make any difference. Adam (alai) should not have approached that tree.
History is replete with such examples. Men have been relentlessly repeating the same mistake. Greece is land of philosophy. Aristotle got the opportunity to mentor the son of the king there. He was Alexander. Aristotle’s ambition was to create an ideal state, an ideal government. The king was turned into an idealist. Alexander made it his objective to expand his empire. He extended till Punjab. Then his army became tired and refused to venture any further. Alexander died at the height of frustration at the age of 33. Alexander did not weigh practical options. He could have created a good government in Greece that the world would have respected and emulated. He wanted to rule and reform the entire world. He ended in abject failure.

There are 750 crore more people. One person can’t get everything. You will get what is essential. That person feels contented and satisfied. Everyone will get adequate sustenance. This is the law of nature. Be happy with what you got. Adam (alai) got paradise. Alexander got Greece. They were not satisfied and they failed.
