Journalism Of Tales

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Social development and social responsibilities should always be the focus. Each sector is marching ahead with high quality output owing to their long and immense experience. Journalism was a service sector in a time. Then it became an occupation and now it operates like any other industry. Journalism is vying for power and authority too.
It is imperative to define norms and limits. The statement issued by the president of Indian press council promises future for this sector. News dailies, weeklies and monthlies basking in paan shops even after 9’o clock are telltale signs of dissent among readers. Even when the cost comes down to 2 rupees, readers are not inclined to show any care.

Inspite of being asked for countless times by the press council, some magazines, reporters and news organizations show no restraint. Norms set for the print media will very well apply for the electronic media also. There should not be any interference in personal lives. Some magazines can avoid tasty accounts of personal lives and secrets, like they saw them with their own eyes. ‘Privacy’ will include family, house, religion, health, sexual orientation and personal contacts. News can be covered if there is danger to public welfare or interest. While photographing terrorist incidents and riots, religion passions should not be incited. Coverage can be so as to enhance public peace, religious tolerance and inter-faith harmony. They should not be exaggerated in a way to inflame religious hatred. Journalist holds the proud and huge responsibility to create peace between various religious and social groups in the country. Headlines and headings should be framed to point to the true content. They should reflect honesty.
Parliament recommended instituting press council in 1966. Freedom of press should be protected and quality of press should improve. The activities of the press council with these two key objectives are commendable.
But the news about a terrorist murder that was widely published during May reminded us of Vikramadithan tales and Sindbad fantasies. Imagination was rich but taste and quality was lacking.
News is getting dreary. News publishing without any sense of responsibility, control and norms is continuing. More papers will hang desolated without takers in the paan shops.

Free Salary Employee

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Efficient functioning of the government is dependent on the competence of its employees. Thousand candidates compete for a single post when applications are invited for a government job. Youngsters are ready to give even three lakh rupees as bribe. Permanent monthly salary has caught everyone's attention and imagination.
Work done in a week should be attached along with the salary slip. Salary should not be given for those days where no work is done. Chennai has become an intensely active global commercial city. Every day new entrants with global reputation are landing and gaining ground here. Its growth and development is there for everyone to see. The quality, standard and efficiency seen in private firms should reflect and be sustained in government firms and offices too. This is imperative in this era. But it is not possible to maintain multinational standards with defunct, unskilled labor. Private firms are reduced to seek mercy from government officers for electricity, transport, land, registration, drinking water supply and sanitation. Incompetent government employees should be shown the door in a staggered manner. There is no other way. Weekly salary should be deducted from those employees who are sluggish and inactive and don’t provide the requested details and are unable to serve. They should not be given full salary.
Government staff who own additional house, land and benami properties can be dismissed. Internet can be leveraged to publish property, land, jewel, savings of employees and his dependents. Employees who do not share these details or provide wrong details should be dismissed and also final settlements should be made to them once and for all. 80 lakh Tamilans are waiting in the employment offices. It is impossible to serve people without monitoring salary and additional properties with government staff. However high be the budget amount, there won’t be any use with incompetent and awfully corrupt staff. It is high time to start weeding out. Else government will not be able to earn good reputation.

Need For A Quality Education Corporation

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Education system that will support our national development is not in place. This was realized as early as in the fourth five-year planning. The education system that is in place is of no use to our economic development. Agriculture and vocational courses are completely ignored in preliminary and medium levels. 70 percent in Germany and 60 percent in Japan choose vocational courses. But only 12 percent students in India opt for vocational courses in the final year of schooling. Student community should be pushed towards vocational courses. Education that is of good quality and inclusive has not been delivered. 92 percent students enter preliminary schools but only 21 percent qualify for higher education. A separate corporation should be commissioned to identify bright students in schools and help them reach higher education. This will yield students who are up to international standards. In the name of “inspection”, education is being hampered in schools. Opportunity to education and quality of education should be handled separately.

Kothari commission amply emphasizes the importance of English language. Some principals are cruelly acting against this. English should be made compulsory in school final year. English is sought after and needed world over. Educational institutions will help in alleviating poverty. People running educational institutions are serving the nation. Government is stingy and parsimonious in distributing education funds and scholarships. Unnecessary, useless and fictitious requirements are mandated. Kindness is not shown. I run day school and evening school in a Muhalla with high population of poor laborers. Commerce is being taught. This is a non-profit-oriented effort to impart education. Yet, inspite of fulfilling and complying all the requirements, I am unable to receive a paltry grant of 2600 rupees. This is the situation in the institution that I head. Education department is not humane in its functioning. Education department is not functioning in a way to address current social demands. The grief is justified. Three percent budget outlay is not sufficient. The views presented by G.M. Banatwala in Maharashtra assembly on July 6, 1967 are completely relevant even today.

New Government's Religion Policy

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Government shows liberal and unilateral intervention in the appointments of chief Kazi in the state, Waqf committee and Haj committee. Four days extra holidays are granted for Muslims working in government offices for first day of Ramzan, shab-e-baraath, lailathul qadr and Mohideen urs. Administrators frenetically rush to convey greetings in media during occasions of Ramzan and Bakridh every year. Leaves are granted to go on holy pilgrimage.
Religion is beneficial to people. It emphasizes good values in life. People, electorate, are looking forward to a government that will give importance to religious preaching. Today individuals and trusts are helping in strengthening religious preaching. Government should set aside 200 crore rupees in its budget for religious preaching.
Exotic culture and western values are spreading among young boys and girls. Government should use Hindu swamijis, Muslim aalims and Christian pastors and try to spread and thrust good values in the state. Religious leaders should be honored in government events and programs and their good advices should be listened to. One hour religious discourse everyday should be made mandatory in schools, educational and research institutions. Student community roaming with single-minded objective of marks is becoming hordes of selfish beasts. Traditions of the land, mercy, kindness, friendliness, respect for parents, elders, guru and teacher are wobbling. Standards are going down. There are hundreds of thousands of engineering, medical, agricultural, media and technological graduates in the state. But the group that pays no attention to people’s welfare and social life is of no use.
Religious life will give eternal peace. Those who have spent more than 10 years in religious institutions, mosques, madrasas, temples and churches in state and district capitals can be leveraged. Religious scholars are living isolated lives. Government should properly honor spiritual people for the spirituality to spread. This will not amount to betrayal of the nation. This will bring down bribe and corruption. Hearts will transform for the better. Constitution allows religious preaching. Crimes are not going to reduce by installing thousands of police, intelligence force or judicial expansion. Religious leaders will herd people to good path with their pleasing advices.
Government can proactively record discourses in religious institutions, weekly Jumaa speeches and buy slots in TV channels and broadcast them live to the audience. Further they can be published in book form and distributed to libraries.

Quran For All

Muhammad Mustafa Shareef Naqsbandhi on 'Quran For All' at Quran Foundation, Tolichowki, Hyderabad
Published in Muslim Murasu, June 2011

In the first five verses of Baqarah Surah, the model for a moomin is presented. First verse lays down the foundation. This is the holy book in which there is no doubt. There can be doubts about other sacred books. But moomin is blessed with satisfaction and peace. This is not available for people of other religions. There is one Veda under the sky that has not undergone any amendment or change and that is Quran, the holy text. There are two huge Nihmath, blessings, from God. 1. Appearance of prophet on the earth and bestowing his Barakath and Rahmath 2. God’s book is another huge blessing. Other blessings are insignificant compared to these two Nihmath. Certainly Injeel was given by God. And so are Tawrath and Zabur. A Muslim believes God, prophets, day of judgement, Kitabs and that destinies of good and bad fortunes come from God. In a nutshell, this is the belief in Islam. First requirement while reading Quran is to have full trust in it. That is why first verse categorically declares that there is no doubt in this book.
It will give hidayath, guidance, to those who fear God. Quran is guidance to people having faith in God. In another place, Quran tells that it is guidance to all human kind. Though it has guidance for everyone, fearing God is the first requirement.
Here it is important to understand Taqwa, fearing God. Umar (rali) was once questioned about Taqwa. Consider a person walking on a narrow path lined on both sides by thorns. It is imperative to walk carefully so as not to damage his clothes or injure his body. Shaitan is distracting from all directions. One should fend off evil designs of Shaitans. This was the explanation by Umar (rali). One should progress without falling prey to vasvasa, confusion and evil thoughts. Taqwa is to escape from internet vulgarities, chatting, nudity sins that is targeting you. An English newspaper published an article about dancing to fitness. It explained that dancing will give fitness. The intention of world people indulging in materialism is that we have gone astray, you also join us and perish. Bush once told that Muslims are not dancing or drinking, that is the reason they go towards terrorism. First thing that Obama did after becoming President is that he danced with his wife before world media. This is American culture. Once a friend invited me for a dinner. He and his wife were freely welcoming and honoring guests. They did not observe gosha, pardah, restriction. This is very bad. Husband and wife can be intimate in their room. But when they come out they should obey social norms. Hyderabad is holding on to its traditional standards of decency. But if western culture spreads then discipline will plunge and disappear. Once Prophet observed zaafran on the hands of one of his companions and he inquired about his marriage. Marriages used to be casual in the days of the holy Prophet. Prophet did not regret that he was not invited for the marriage. He inquired about valima with friendly spirit. But in today’s world, marriage invitation is creating lot of friction. One should accept telephone invitation instead of compelling to be invited in person. You should have only Prophet’s exemplary life in front of your eyes. You should not be disturbed by the cheap changes that are taking place in the world. Prophet did not say that he could have been invited atleast for dua or kutba. He did not compel. Nowadays ilm, knowledge, is increasing. But hilm, tolerance, is decreasing. If you tolerate minor inconveniences, your respect and status will go up.
Day is to work and night is to sleep and take rest. This is God’s command. But now companies are working in three shifts. Prophet said not to talk after Isha. But today they have changed nights as days. Lifestyle is in complete contrast with that preached in Quran and hadees. Quran is not only to memorize, but to follow.
A successful lawyer will often go through law books. If he has laws and amendments at his finger tips he will be successful. A Muslim who does not read Quran cannot be successful in his life. Daily one should recite few verses. Only then God’s commands will stay in heart and reflect in actions. A Muslim doing zikr will not accept bribes. People coming to listen bayaan should bring pen and take down important details in a notebook. Money is not needed to bring change. Aqlaq is important. Prophet did not have money, he was a single person. He had the ability to change Uhad mountain into gold. He did not have gold mine. He preached by virtue of his tolerance, discipline and hard efforts. He did not preach with help of money. He expressed his desire to live with Misqeens and rise along with misqeens in Mahshar. He never desired for dawlath, wealth. God asked him whether he wants nubuwath along with wealth or nubuwath along with poverty. Prophet chose nubuwath with poverty. Islam did not spread with the help of money or power. Prophet did not have arms power in Mecca. The faith was spread by the Prophet’s discipline, aqlak; money did not help. Hameedullah went alone to France from Hyderabad and spread Islam there. He was expert in 15 languages. Muslims did not fulfill the role of Khaira Ummath. Sankaracharyar once told that messages in Quran are same as those in the Vedas. But Muslims did not spread it, follow it.
Man cannot discover everything from his knowledge and experience. The objective of Prophet’s coming is to teach Ibadath. The basis of all religions is God and remembrance of God. Once Russia championed atheism, but now they also accept God. God’s remembrance comes to societies after they are ruined. People come to their proper minds after suffering terrible losses. A person not born in Muslim family has to overcome huge hurdles and challenges to embrace Islam. If a baby is born in seven months, it has to be kept in incubation chamber. Laws made by God cannot be altered. All of us are in examination hall. Some are tested in poverty with lack of wealth. All of us are being tested. Take notes. Prophet told that Abushah (rali) has poor memory, so write down my sayings for his benefit. In another occasion, Prophet told to use straight hand (pen).
A sufi told that his failures reminded him more of God. So always use Insha Allah before making any promise. When prophet was asked about cave men, he suddenly told that he will reply the next day. Wahi did not come for many days. Then God told him to tell Insha Allah. Telling Mashaallah, Inshaallah is Ibadath. Whenever Prophet addressed any person, he used to mention their name and address them. When you give handshake to someone, give it properly and firmly. When two persons give handshake, both of their sins will be forgiven. Their sins will fall like leaves falling from a tree in dry season. English men are practicing giving handshakes. Prophet taught us practical things.
Leave ego. I will know some things that you might not know and you will know some things that I will be ignorant of. Allah has given different wealth to different countries. He has given human resource to one country, petroleum reserves in another country and technology to some other country. Quran emphasizes to share and live. Live mutually is God’s command. Saudi has Ka’batullah. It has petrol and pepsi sells at one riyal. But it does not have drinking water. When one drinks deccan water, his face becomes bright. Allah has given this nihmath to Hyderabad people.
People following Quran are noble people, Auliyas. Hindus, Christians and Jews should be considered as creation of God. No one should be looked down upon. To regard others as worthier than us is habit of Auliyas. Others should respect your behavior. One should not indulge in self-praise.

America Story Teller

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Grandmas used to tell tales and put grandchildren to sleep. Finding grandma in this modern mechanic age has become difficult. American administration takes up the responsibility. It is a spectacular job to narrate stories to the global audience, blunt their intellect, sedate them and put them to sleep.
But the hidden motives, selfishness and hypocrisy of the detractors of American dominance is surprising. Some Indian, Tamil, intellectuals expose America’s world dominance. America is not going to be disturbed by these. The fiction load or breaking news that America releases is vomited within a minute in all the media. This bears testament to America’s unique might and international leadership.
America is an union of 50 states, sprawled across 10 lakh square km, home to 31 crore people, spending 43% for military, with multiple races, plural culture and with considerable immigrant population. It is a permanent member of United Nations council and is headquarters of UN council. It is the core member and backbone of G8, G20 and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). There is this news that America spends 13 lakh crore rupees, 25 billion dollars, for international relations. Canada, England, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel are its branch countries. It is the third largest petroleum manufacturer. Brands like Coca Cola and McDonald are dominating in global markets. It has 15 crore hard workers; 24 crore Christians, 5 crore Americans are irreligious or religion-agnostic. There is no religion-based census. Statistics from private firm pegs Muslim population at 70 lakh. This land embraces the ideal of secularism.
It has embassies in all the countries. 6 embassies in India, 4 in Pakistan, 4 in Bangladesh, 2 in Sri Lanka add strength to its international relationships. America information centre in Chennai started its operations in 1947. 14000 books, 140 magazines, 10000 academic research papers, 30000 eBooks and official publications of American government are available in this library for public access. 25 Chennai based entrepreneurs participated in the seminar conducted for importers. Distributors resolved to double the import from US with focus on medical equipments, bioscience materials, leather products, automobile parts, fitness equipments and green products.
The might of America forms the background for its marketing prowess and international clout. Let American detractors first prove their credibility. In the present circumstances dominated by selfishness, anti-Americanism cannot be anything more than a mirage or a poor joke.

Drinking Water Bottle Ban

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Water should be given to dry throat. This is Indian culture. Today a thirsty person hesitates to ask water from a fellow passenger. He feels shy. Self-respect does not allow asking for mercy. Consequently one suffers thirst.
One litre water bottle costs 16 rupees. Three lakh water pumps have been properly tested and installed by the central government and the details are readily available for the public at drinking water department web site (DDWS). Central government has meticulously documented water table situation in Tamilnadu. This bears witness to open, transparent functioning of the government. Borewells that dig deep, hand pumps that sucks from shallow depths, day and year when drinking water management scheme was started, water quality, treatment, sanitation protection, are categorized and listed based on panchayats, taluks, districts and states.
Drinking water distributed by government is of good quality. Yet bottled water is seeing scorching sales owing to marketing muscle of private companies. Seven crore Tamilans, at the rate of 5 litre per person, drink a total of 35 crore litres of water. But they do not spend 600 crore rupees for this per day. Farmers, laborers and middle class drink water supplied by government and live healthily. But still an imagination is created that bottled water is good. Those with money clout prefer bottle water.
More than 80 drinking water labs are operating in Tamilnadu. In addition, pollution control board, public welfare department, public healthcare department labs monitor drinking water management.
Ideally production cost and lab cost for bottle drinking water companies should be spectacularly high. 50 lakh rupees for building cost at district level, salary for scientist, electricity cost, lab instruments, vehicles, chemicals, one crore rupees will be needed per year for a district. Bottle firms are not happy to spend such a huge sum. The quality of bottle water and packet water should be scrutinized by government, private service organizations and consumer associations. Commercial fraudsters manufacturing bottles without quality should be sent to prison.
India has 2.4% of global land area. India accounts for 16% of world population. But the drinking water available is a meager 4%. Thirst of 120 crore people has to be quenched with the scarce water available. Drinking water should be used only for drinking. It should not be used for farming activities, industries, car cleaning, washing dresses and removing wastes. Recycling can be implemented to use waste water again and again. Countless colleges that have mushroomed in Tamilnadu can help in introducing simple methods to segregate salt. This will end lust for bottle water.

Emergency – Cruel Face Of Democracy

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Emergency was declared in India between 1975 and 1977. This was a dark period. 1,10,000 Indian citizens were tormented in prisons without proper reasons. 26,000 government staffs were unjustifiably dismissed from office. 1,50,000 houses were razed down in New Delhi alone. 81 lakh citizens were forcibly administered family planning instruments.
The landslide victory that Indira Gandhi secured in 1971 election gave rise to an autocratic mentality. But within three years, protests and agitations arose against misuse of power, corrupt government and venal administration. 235 students were killed in students agitation in Bihar. Gujarat and Bihar state machinery collapsed.
Jayaprakash Narayan led the opposition against Congress. Congress was the mammoth ruling power after having garnered 66% of votes. That was a period when out of 441 M.P seats, Congress candidates won in 342 seats. Congress declared emergency when it was in majority.
Janamorcha Party won elections against Congress in Gujarat. Justice Sinha in Allahabad high court pronounced verdict nullifying Indira Gandhi’s electoral win. Further Indiraji was banned from contesting in elections for next six years. For these two reasons Prime Minister Indiraji enforced emergency on 25.6.1975. Government got limitless, unbridled power in its grip.
Countless complaints, abuses and excesses have been documented with reference to emergency. 36 years have passed since. But there is no change in the situation. Names of the parties have changed. Some parties have disintegrated and new extras have taken their places. Mentality of the higher officers and limitless, sky-high powers of politicians remain unchanged. Depicting emergency period as second independence struggle is farcical.
Present rulers have eclipsed both British period and 1975 demonic emergency period. Central government has already given permits for 653 private TV channels. 31 more TV channels will be rolled out quite soon. 806 new FM stations are in the queue. Two thousand newspapers and magazines are serving corporates. There is no embargo to publish or telecast news. Ruling class did not tolerate people oriented news during British period and emergency period. But in these days, rife with mature intellect and spirit of liberty, news that benefits people is not available. The fact that public opinion is formed to serve the interests of corporates and ruling politicians remain mysterious and incomprehensible.

Nuclear Energy Is Not Needed

Muslim Murasu, June 2011

Kalpakkam is located at 70 kilometer from Chennai along the south-east coast. It houses two reactors each generating 220 Megawatts. Atomic Energy Corporation is a Central government institution. The electricity generated here is shared among Andhra, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondichery and Tamilnadu. Under federal administration, Tamilnadu gets a share of 75%.
The design, technology, installation, operation and maintenance of Kalpakkam atomic power station is done completely by Indian technocrats. Uranium that is naturally available in India is used here. These two reactors work continuously for 346 days and 432 reactors respectively. 51000 million units (MU) has been generated.
2000 hectares will be gobbled up to generate hydro electricity. Nuclear energy can be generated with land of just 20 hectares. Coal based power plants will need 70 hectares. Nuclear power plants contribute to 18% of electricity generation globally. It saves the world from 250 crore tonnes of carbon dioxide greenhouse gas.
Habitation and movement of people is not allowed within 1.5 km radius around the atomic power plant site. Protection to vegetation and living beings are monitored upto 5 km radius. Emergency Planning Zone is upto 16 km radius around the site. Atomic power plant station is operating with elaborate crisis management plans.
250 engineering students are given implant training every year; one year training for ITI students. Native people living in the surrounding villages are allowed visits to the atomic power plant. The power plant has secured ISO-14001 certification. Protection is also given to the nearby Edayur bird sanctuary ecosystem.
These are the arguments stacked up by the scientists from the atomic power plant. Deterrents of nuclear energy list counter opinions.
Hydro electricity is the cheapest power generation method in the world. Production cost is only 15 crore rupees. But France has sold two nuclear reactors amounting to 5000 crore rupees. Russia has secured a bargain to sell 2000 tonnes of Uranium; 780 million dollar, 4000 crore rupees. Production cost for nuclear energy is going up. And a separate expenditure is needed to guard nuclear waste for 100 years. Two lakh crore rupees will have to be shelled out over 20 years to generate 40000 MW.
Environmental activists are up in arms against nuclear energy. Solar energy should get adequate attention. Wind energy will surely complement it. Elite group is coming as an obstacle to national development.
