Merit To Celebrate Milad

Bilalishah Zuhoori on Tamilan TV
Published in Muslim Murasu, July 2011

“They remember God morning and evening. Keep thy company with them”. God commanded so to our holy prophet. Duniya(materialism) should stay out of our hearts. God should be present in our hearts.
Many scholars and people those who love prophet participate in Milad celebrations. Scholars who have served a long time in the muhalla or madrasa also take part. When in such an event where descendants of prophet have turned up in numbers, if one thinks ‘my speech should be the best’ then it is sign of kufr. I should exalt prophet more than anyone else. If anyone thinks like this, if they desire first prize, then they are totally unfit to praise the prophet.
Everyone should praise our prophet. Everyone should speak well. In fact, others should speak better than me. And by that, all admirers of prophet should feel delighted. Allah Himself should feel pleased. If you have this status of mind, then give speech.
We have smell of sweat in our hands. When we apply sandal in our hands, it gives pleasant odour. Sandal will have its own odour even when no one uses it. But when applied on hand, it gives its odour to our hands. But at the same time, sweat smell from hand clings on to sandal and impacts it. While we get pleasant odour, we should not forget the effect we cause on sandal.
In the name of ‘praising’ and ‘glorifying’, we unmeritorious people bring disrepute to our prophet. Because we are unqualified for praising him, we unwittingly give disgrace to him. To think that I praised better, so first prize belongs to me is wrong. After praising prophet, one should repent. I praised prophet while I don’t have any merit to do so. Ya Allah! Please forgive me, forgive me for the sake of our prophet. One can praise prophet with these humble thoughts.
Kalima should occupy our hearts and thoughts. In fact to utter kalima, to understand kalima, to see kalima and to become kalima can be listed as shariath, thareekath, hakeekath and mareefath. La ilaha illallahu muhammadur rasoolullah – 24 letters. 24 hours in a day. When a person says kalima, 24 letters in kalima earns him forgiveness for sins of 24 hours. Everyday he becomes a pure infant.
Shaitan considered him loftier than prophet Adam. This led him to kufr, and he was damned and cursed. The elephant army of Abraha was shattered. Koonu ma sadhikeen. However heavy be your prayers, you should find company with people seeking Allah’s pleasure. Having friendship with wrong doers will bring ruin even if your prayers are sincere.

Uniform System of School Education Debate

Two different views on Uniform System of School Education
Published in Muslim Murasu, July 2011

I always take neutral stand. Education in Tamilnadu started to deteriorate in late sixties and early seventies. After 42 years only Tamilians who have migrated to foreign lands are able to write. Tamilnadu that produced eminent intellectuals, creators and thinkers some time back is no more the same. Tamil is now only receiving from outside. Tamil diaspora are giving lifeline to Tamil. Their service to Tamil warrants appreciation.
Deterioration in Tamilnadu should be stopped. There exists a staggering difference between urban schools and rural schools. State board, matriculation, oriental board and Anglo-Indian board, these four boards should be merged and one common Tamilnadu state secondary board with a common syllabus should be created. It should be an autonomous body. CBSE is already in place.
There is talk about education in mother tongue. Is it education through mother language or education through Tamil language? People speaking different languages reside in Tamilnadu.
There should be one teacher for 30 students. My wife is a teacher. 140 students are sitting in a classroom. There is not adequate space even for 80 students. On an average, there is one teacher per 70 students provided today. There should be one inspector for 30 schools. And he should pay undivided attention to this task. But today there is one inspector per 400 schools. Inspections in schools are not proper.
Children should not trudge long distance in search of good education. Schools should be situated nearby. Quality education should be brought to where student lives. Government can operate kinder garten schools. There is robbery happening in fees. Equal education is not given. Schools should be run entirely by government administration.
Every one should be given equal and standard education. It need not be limited only to first standard and sixth standard classes. Recommendation does not have ‘equal’ word anywhere. It recommends ‘education of same quality’!
It is not possible to implement uniform education without trained teachers. The mission does not end with distributing books. There are no black boards in many schools. Some schools are operating with some facilities donated solely by individual philanthropists.
Life based on ideals and virtues is missing in Tamilnadu. It has disappeared. Teachers should own up this delinquency. They have missed for 30 years. Professionally sound engineers, doctors and lawyers will be available, but good human beings will not be produced. This is a major inadequacy in uniform education. Do you want a person rich in knowledge or a person rich in wisdom? I am talking in apolitical terms. Arignar Anna and Gnani Rajaji. Both are legends. There is no doubt about it. Today’s education system will produce many Annas, but not even a single Rajaji. Anna is not lacking in any way.
- Bharathi Baskaran

Tamil medium education and English medium education, both are in place in Tamilnadu. This is not uniform education. Government has not guaranteed education through Tamil. There is teaching language and then there is language that is taught. French is the medium of education in France. They learn French till sixth standard. They learn through French. Later from sixth standard they learn one additional European language. French is the medium of education from elementary level to research level.
There are lacunae in Muthukumaran report. Government can list down inadequacies. Even the previous government did not heed to infrastructure issues. But that cannot be a reason to abandon the mission.
Even before election, English medium schools management did not accept and were against uniform syllabus. Their argument was that quality is lacking.
Yashpal committee recommended reducing the syllabus burden. They stipulated weights to be carried on back. Chittibabu report also recommended reduction in load. Thiruchengode broiler poultry farming is being practiced. Children do not need such education, nor do the society. Inquisitive mentality and scientific temperament should be nurtured. Social and humane qualities should be fostered. Children are not race horses. Race schools are not needed.
Schools should be situated nearby. Only then uniform education goal will be completed. There is inadequacy in teacher-student ratio. Should primary health center wait till G.H like facilities are delivered? Four syllabuses are merged and one common syllabus is created. This is a progress. Let primary health care center be started with the facilities available now. Later buildings can be added.
Both the earlier government and the current dispensation have failed in delivering uniform education. There are discrepancies in both. Present government claims to accept uniform education in principle and tries to permanently put it in back-burner. This is an effort to enhance fleecing in education.
Scoring good marks in education does not suffice for quality. Matriculation system is of poor standard. Back-breaking academic burden, untrained teachers. Teachers are paid pittance. Schools with just one or two teachers can be reformed. Toilets are not provided.
But this has nothing to do with uniform education. Funds given through Sarva siksha abiyaan should not be used to buy cars. Toilets should be constructed.
Matriculation students enjoy roads laid down by government. In the same spirit they should accept uniform education plan offered by government. Else let them use their own roads. Responsibility to impart education rests with the government. Emergence of fake educational corridors should not be allowed. Our hearts court Macaulay. Thiruvalluvar is missing.

Read Quran

Maulana Fazlur Rahman speech during inauguration of
library in Masjid-e-Fatima, Tolichowki, Hyderabad
Published in Muslim Murasu, July 2011

The opening verses of 96th Surah Alaq were the first direct Revelations to the holy Prophet. Iqra- read. In the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created. Created man, out of a clot of blood. Read! And thy Lord is most bountiful. He who taught the Pen – taught man that which he knew not.
In some narration of this incident, it is said as “Gabriel showed a slate and asked to read what is written there”. But the general account is that the holy Prophet was asked to recite what was recited.
First command from God is to read. Read with the name of Allah. “Ilm”, knowledge, will make one close to Allah. Moomins are bestowed with ilm. Ilm is that which is associated with Allah’s name. This is beneficial knowledge. Rest all is useless. Prophet prayed Allah for purposeful knowledge and sought refuge from wasteful knowledge.
Contemporary education has no association with the name of Allah. This is not knowledge. This will not help in pleasing Allah. This does not inspire tenderness and sympathy on creations of Allah. Alimiyan shares his thought that the character of well-educated people today is to steal food from others and feed their dogs, and take clothes from others and decorate their walls. The education that fills one with greed is ignorance and folly. This is not light, but darkness.
Where are our children heading? We should think. Too far from God. Target of today’s education is duniya, not akhirat. It looks like ilm but in reality is foolishness. Those who associate “iqra” verse with this materialistic education are wrong and committing a grave mistake.
There was a period when doctors commanded high respect from people after Islamic scholars and Sufis. They were not greedy, they never grabbed others food or dress. They lived a humble and honest life. They were sympathetic to creations of Allah. Allah blessed them with sublime honor.
Iqra, kalam, allama, malam yahlam, all these words make it clear that the subject is knowledge. Of all the miracles bestowed to the holy Prophet, chief of them is Quran, a knowledge-based miracle. Moses had his hand-stick and luminous hand. Jesus hands will give relief and cure from diseases. ‘Kitab’ means that which is written. This is the miracle given to our holy Prophet. Knowledge that is written. The people of that prophet, the prophet on whom ilm-miracle happened, are today ignorant of the importance of ilm. We are in a pathetic situation to proclaim its importance.
One important incident in Abdul Khader Jeelani misses our attention. Thieves stopped him on a journey and inquired him about money. But where was he traveling and for what purpose? He was traveling in the pursuit of knowledge. Those days did not have transport facilities. There is no guarantee one will return if he ventures out. Journey was hard and treacherous. Still he journeyed with quest for knowledge.
Our offspring today are going to parks, picnic spots, hill stations and international tour for amusement. There is no clarity even about basics and fundamentals. Prophet told that life period of my ummath is between 60 and 70. My sheik used to tell me that when a person crosses 60, thereafter he should consider every year as extension. After 70, every day should bring to his mind that his life is extended. Still one has not finished reading a single seerath book.
Please don’t keep newspapers in Muslim libraries. They will talk futile about Iran and Afghan. They will know the world but unaware of their neighborhood. Talk about Quran, prophet, his companions and their lives, in mosques. The life of prophet is practical illustration of Quran. One should change and deserve good rewards. The education that creates arguments and counter-arguments will lead to hell. Counter arguments are of no use. “I will earn fame, sit with scholars or fight with less-informed people”. This knowledge takes one to hell.
One has no habit of crying before Allah, does not shudder in solitude, does not read or memorize Quran. But despite all these some people are giving tafseer. Read for your own benefit. It is food for your soul. Now there is rise in CDs, computers and internet. But the experience one gets in reading a hardcopy book stands apart. This is found after research. After spoiling one generation, now they have realized that mother’s milk is energy-rich than bottled milk. They come to proper sense after losses. Reading books is useful and there is no match to it.
Everyone should return to Allah, read having this in the back of the mind. Abandon TV. Don’t waste your time and life. God has been merciful. Hair has become white. Do not see cricket and spoil life. Do not miss ‘waqt’ seeing TV. Consider the remaining life as bounty. Sleep and take rest for some time.

Disappointing Religion-Politics Conflict

Muslim Murasu, July 2011

Governments are more religion-centric in India’s neighboring countries Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. No one can rule people after opposing, insulting and ignoring religious leadership or leader.
For the past 63 years, western culture has been thrust upon India in the garb of secularism. Graduates from universities in America and London reigned Indian population. Taking cue from revolutionary struggles in Muslim countries, guardians of culture of the land grew in India. Religion, vedas, tradition and ancient wisdom fed through television, media and internet gave new impulse to alternative ideas in the past 20 years. The converging point between religion and politics is being scrutinized.
The group that was desperate for used cigarettes, tea remains and stale food entered political stage and enjoyed luxurious life. Rise of spiritualists rile such people. The day when authority will slip from the hands of politicians and fall under the feet of spiritualist is not very far. Religious leaders can control and streamline politics; there is nothing wrong in it. Religion inspires discipline and softness. It is capable of purifying hearts.
People wait patiently praying for peaceful heart in the aura of religious leaders. Those who make beeline to swanky buildings of politicians are hankering after luxuries. This is the difference. People surrender themselves under graceful feet of religious leaders and willingly donate their properties, wealth and funds. Mind-boggling properties that politician has gathered has come from oppression. It has been accumulated by misuse of police, investigating agencies, income tax office and courts of law. Politician cannot gather wealth without trampling human rights and honesty of fellow citizens.
Spiritual elders who have been in a long and deep slumber, are for the first time passionate for standing against political transgressions. They should disentangle themselves from dance, music festivities, narrating stories and monastic refuge. Slumber of 63 years cannot be shaken off in a few months or few events. Continuous awareness preaching will be beneficial.
Majority of Indians love, respect and adore religion and religious leaders. Lofty qualities of religious stalwarts should guide India. Fraud politician does not have strength to suppress or threaten religious leader. Religious leaders have contact with Divine. They have their throne in the hearts and spirits of people.
The conflict between faith and politics is uncalled for. This will push nation backwards. Politician can administrate nation with honesty. Religious person can control politician with blissful, motherly attitude. It is not possible anymore to stop dominance of religion, religiosity, religious affinity and religion-centric environment.

Serving Mankind Is Islam

Maulana Rizwan Pasha Quadri
DarseQuran at Masjid-e-shujath, Tolichowki, Hyderabad
Published in Muslim Murasu, July 2011

Sura Ala Imran, Rukoo 12, comprising 11 verses. Allah refers to three subjects – responsibilities of Muslim, character of Jews and fate of those who reject Faith.
Kunthum - you; khair – good, best; ummath – people. Muslims are the best people in the sight of Allah. There are no other people as accepted by Allah like you. Allah does not like anyone else more than you.
Why is this superiority? Allah lists down the reasons. You have been evolved for mankind. Some consider good earning, well-educated sons and daughters, building lavish houses as superiority; they claim they have succeeded. Earning for self and family cannot be considered as standard for superiority. You have not been sent to earth for this. Everyone is mindful of family and self-interests. The opinion of Islam is that Muslim has not come to earth to fulfill his needs. Quran declares that you have been sent for mankind.
The meaning of this is to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. After this Allah tells that you believe in Him. The order is reversed in this verse. First give commands for good deeds, stop from wrong things, then Imaan (Faith). First Faith, rest later is Quran style. But in this verse it is reversed.
Man has two duties. One towards Allah and one towards creations; huqookullah and huqooqul ibaad. Here duty to creations have been given priority. Why so? If you have Faith, it is beneficial to you. But when you preach righteousness and forbid wrongs, the world is benefited. The identity of Moomin is that he secures his interests, but more than that he will care for others.
Today sons and daughters do not prefer parents interference in their life. You don’t have right to interfere in my life. There are three kind of people to whom message should be delivered - wealthy and rich; middle class who are sloppy both in deen(spirituality) and duniya(materialism); slum-dwellers. High class people do not give importance to religion, they are arrogant. Middle class people show some interest here and some there. Slum dwellers are vulnerable to do sins. Penury can lead one to Kufr. Prophet sought Allah’s refuge from poverty. Moomin has to reach out to all three kinds of people.
Very few people are involved in Dawah works. Very few are concerned about others. Allah says in Quran that of all the words, best words are those that calls people towards Him. Then he commands to work righteousness. Nafs, conscience, revolts saying “First you mend your ways, then you can change others”. But Allah says that first call out to others and follow it up with good deeds. Conscience will stir while inviting others to righteousness. Gradually the person will change for the better. He will have to face people’s contempt if he preaches others but he himself is not following. This is the best way to eschew wrong deeds; to tell others to eschew wrong.
You are not superior because of your wealth or reputation or knowledge. You repent for others, your hearts are pained with concern for others. This makes you the best. You value well-being of the society. You are distressed about sorrows and troubles of other people.
Prophet won’t come again. You have to come to field to deliver message to people. Prophet told during Hajjul-vida, last Haj, that even if you know one good thing convey it to others. Forget your status, highness and wealth, come down and preach the message. You need not be bogged down by your weaknesses. Listen to Allah’s book Quran. Your words can be weak, your character can be flawed. But the words of Quran that you present are powerful and will provide guidance. You are not pure; but Quran is most pure.
Nowadays the inconvenience in spreading information has vanished. We are living in information era. Lot of people will read if news or advertisements are published and will stand informed. Good news will spread fast. One of the signs of Qayamat, apocalypse, is that Islam would have entered every house. Now Islam is entering through books, magazines, TV and internet. Only requirement is to have interest and passion to convey.
Having Faith in Allah is listed at third place. First commanding good deeds, next forbidding bad things. Prophet has said the person who first said and did a good act will eternally receive rewards until that good act is practiced. All companions of Prophet placed welfare of others above their own welfare. Gowzul Azam is an exalted Sufi. The meaning of his title is ‘one who helps others’. Meaning of ‘Gharib Nawaz’ is ‘one who helps poor people’. Prophet says that helping a person is better than 1000 rakaath Nafl namaz in the sight of Allah. In another hadees it comes, as Allah has said, ‘if you had paid visit to the diseased person, you would have seen Me’.
Elders in Islam were concerned about entire mankind. Thus did Islam spread. They served all creations of God; not just Moomins but were beneficial to everyone.

Islamic Editorial Policy

Muslim Murasu, July 2011

Tamilnadu is seeing enormous new changes in literary landscape. Muslims are also rising above commercial interests and conquering new heights in this sacred ambition. State and central governments do not pay any attention whatsoever to Islamic journalism. Self-interest, self-sufficiency and philanthropic bent of mind form the core elements of Islamic journalism. Journalists enjoy sole ownership of relentless hard work, efforts and struggles.
Islamic magazines have not seen adequate commercial success. A small group is forced to handle myriad tasks of advertisement management, tours, editing, money collection, content creation and propaganda.
Central objective is to protect characteristic culture. It is the prime objective of magazines to establish cordial relationship and balance between Hindu society, government and Muslim society.
Advertisements published by private firms, haj companies, jewellery shops, malls, private colleges and philanthropic trusts will not yield adequate revenue. People having property worth 5 crore rupees shall sponsor one page advertisement or donate development fund. Those who spend 30 lakh rupees on wedding ceremony can give one page advertisement. Publishers releasing books at a cost of 50000 rupees can give sponsor. Those who go to Haj with their family spending 10 lakh rupees shall give one page advertisement.
Thriving Muslim educational institute owners in district can give four pages of advertisements and news that will share their experiences. One Muslim student every year should be groomed to be interested in journalism.
Life history of pioneers and social architects from Muslim society should be given coverage of two pages. Muslim contribution in district development can be documented. Interviews of experts and new comers in small businesses, commerce, politics and science should be given adequate space. Journalist should abandon submitting pleas and requests to government and adorn their role as counselor, supporter and helping guide.
Two pages should be set aside for ancient Tamil literature. Texture of the land, its tradition, culture and values should be vociferously announced to the outer world. This will give permanent merit to live in Tamilnadu and shatter the Arab fanatic terrorist caricature. Tamil lovers will feel delighted. Two pages should be given to throw light on ancient Islamic Tamil songs. Muslims know Arabic, they know holy prophet and they know chaste Tamil. Let us prove it. New contemporary Tamil litterateurs can be introduced and honored. Holy Quran, hadees, Juma speeches and Muslim events should be given coverage of not less than ten pages.
Religion, Tamil, science, national outlook and humanity are the defining features of Islamic editorial policy.
