A Labourer Lost

Muslim Murasu, September 2011

Forty years ago, Muslim trade and commerce enjoyed preeminent position in district capitals including North Chennai. Muslim traders, their families and their long list of relatives moved to places like Vadalur, Neyveli, Vilupuram, Cuddalore, Panruti, from 300 k.m distances and saw a lot of money. Native people and aboriginals had to depend on these newcomers even for half a kilogram rice or quarter of a liter kerosene.
Now situation is upside down. Modern rice mills also slipped away from the hands of Muslims.
A Muslim comes in earthy dress, hitchhiking on a goods truck, and comes to a new place. Money starts showering within few months and years. He renovates his dilapidated house in his native village. He gets his sister married. It follows with his marriage. Life is sunshine. He arranges his daughter’s marriage with 100 sovereign gold. Life is exuberant. He is adorned with Haji title. Tableeg Jamath background adds to his honour with ‘Ameer saab’ title.
All this changes all of a sudden and everything goes for a toss. Money rotation goes haywire. Shop is sold. House is mortgaged for throwaway price and later gets gobbled up. Muslim trader is reduced to a humble, diminutive life.
A scrutiny of lives of Muslim merchants in Cuddalore and Vilupuram districts, their internal and external facets, unscrupulous methods, trade and financial dealings and social atmosphere will disclose many shocking revelations. The families that were once kings in trade are now disintegrated and disgraced. All their pride has vanished. Regional big brother dominance has bitten the dust.
A close look into the history of forty years merchandise will reveal thousand Quranic discourses. Arrogant defiance to Quranic commands will stare in the face. Capricious attitude, Jakath denial, labour abuse, extravagance, sexual misbehavior, regional and casteist chivalry, misuse of trust, these can be listed as reasons for decline. There was no one to explain what is good and what is bad. The community that prospered and the community that declined, both should be analyzed in the light of Quran.
Those who held their heads high as owners are now pitifully pushed to nomadic life. A proper, unbiased, deep and patient analysis is needed. Examining the decline of Muslim merchandise will help to streamline lives of others. Muslim organizations and political parties and Muslim movements shall candidly document and put on record the methods and trends handled in trade. This is the first step to revive and uplift Muslim commerce once again.

Unending Violence Over Land Negotiations

Muslim Murasu, September 2011

Acquisition is the first thing a person involves in after acquiring political power. British law grants access based on ‘paper’ facts. Who owns the land is not important. One person uses the land. Patta (registration) is with another. A powerful middleman enters the picture. It is difficult to set the rules. Gangster, police officer, revenue bureaucrat, lawyer and politician continuously compete for the valued broker position.
During 1970s, poverty-stricken candidates entered politics and found it gratifying. Occupying government lands followed. Thirty years has seen good development. They have gone further to transform even private owned properties.
A government staff earning 50000 rupees per month cannot sit on judgement over properties worth five crore rupees. River is in spate. Let us take what we can. This is the attitude of government officer.
Landless people are countless. Three crore people in Tamilnadu live in rented houses. But those who tasted government fund and power gather homes, villas and plots in multiple districts. Twenty lack Tamilans have transformed as looters. They constitute a mammoth dominating force. Under their auspice and mercy, one crore Tamilans have risen as new wealth holders. They cut across caste, religion, district and political party divide. They operate as single team, single group with single-minded objective to loot and pilfer.
It is not possible to punish those involved in cases over land acquisition and Patta fraud. This scandal is prevalent both in rural and urban areas without distinction. There is no use in framing legal cases. Judgements should be pronounced within a period of one month. Legal drama should not go on for years together. People have lost confidence.
Scores of landless people will aggravate land scandals. Occupying land will continue with violent ferocity. Cat is friend to milk. Police won’t stop land perpetration. Politician can occupy and acquire anything and in any quantity. There is no one to stop this. This is present reality.

Will Madurai Headquarters Be A Guiding Force

Muslim Murasu, September 2011

Muslims in Tamilnadu played a vital role in the change of government at the Centre. All-forty-for-us pledge came true. Ballots from Tamilnadu Muslims helped significantly in removing BJP rule and making Dr. Manmohan Singh as Prime Minister.
Muslim religious leaders and movements gave the background for the anti-BJP sentiment that was in the air in mosques and Muhallas in Tamilnadu. Government in Tamilnadu also changed hands as an offshoot. But Muslims did not get any harvest. The result of this was abundantly clear in the recent state election results.
Tamilnadu Ulamas and Alims constitute a significant force. They have spectacular propaganda potential. The current rulers in the state are patrons of religion. They love, respect and support religion. Muslim religious preachers should wisely use this beautiful opportunity.
State headquarters office for Ulama Sabhai is standing tall and proud in Madurai city. Efforts and prayers of senior Alims, social philanthropists and religious scholars should help to lift the community. The role of Muslim electorate was significant in the state election verdict. Ruler appears to respect the sentiments of Muslim society.
Everyone should be aware of the times we live in. Muslim society does not have separate demands. Demands and petitions for development of Tamil society will fit perfectly for Muslim community also. There is no need to list distinct demands.
State Ulama Sabhai should actively participate in finalizing merits and candidature for members and chairman of Wakf Board and Haj committee. They should have direct contact with the ruler. There is no need for middleman. Letter pad, signature and visiting card from Madurai headquarters should earn due respect. If an organization puts its best efforts in right direction, its status will rise in few months.
All the 12000 mosques in Tamilnadu function as offices and branches of Ulama Sabhai. Inspite of this, a separate, distinct headquarters is being constructed. This is a kind of development. No one can deny that. It should work as bridge between Muslim society in Tamilnadu and the government. Their targets and vision should not be narrowed down to 8 rakaath, 20 rakaath dispute, crescent (Hilaal) confusion or salary inadequacy. They should rise above such issues and construct and strengthen themselves as a guiding force and well-wisher for the government. Office bearers from state Ulama Sabhai should meet Chief Minister face to face once in every month or two.
Madurai office has its tasks cut out. Ulama Sabhai should constructively interfere in Planning Commission budget allocation and formulating policy for External Affairs. They should pay full attention to computerization and modernization. Government is in need of data about destitute women, widows, unmarried women and educated but unemployed women. It is the job of the headquarters to give relevant statistics to the government. Let there be no callous attitude.

Pressing Need For Urdu Tamil Connect

Muslim Murasu, September 2011

Urdu enjoys the pride of having ruled India for 800 years. Mughals developed this language passionately with full help from Hindus. It is one of the Indian languages. Apart from North Indian Muslims, Muslims from Andhra and Karnataka are also fluent in this language.
Language plays a vital role to give exposure to any issue at national level. Urdu is a sweet connecting language. North Indian Muslims are continuously holding esteem posts, thanks to their proximity to Delhi. Urdu becomes essential to meet and discuss a matter directly with Prime Minister, President, Central ministers and senior administrators. People in North India are fanatic about their language. Indian administration operates from New Delhi. It is not possible to win a favor or argument using Tamil language.
Tamilnadu leaders display dual characters. When they go to Delhi, they fully surrender to the language there. When they come to Chennai, they invent farcical hypocritical ideas about mother tongue and Tamil heritage.
Tamil culture, tradition, loyalties and pledges come handy in politics to hoodwink innocent Tamilans. Offsprings and wards of these leaders are not aware of Tholkappiyam, Kural, Silambu, doyen Avvai, Natrinai or Kurunthogai.
Tamil passion that was in its prime in the sixties was ravaged and decimated by political looters.
Those who seek to survive in Tamilnadu politics should learn expertise in the language of New Delhi. There is no other go. Local politics won’t help much.
Muslims are, basically, patrons and lovers of Islamism. A great treasure of Islamic knowledge is available in countless books in Urdu. It is impossible to be a complete Islamic preacher without being conversant in Urdu.
In Tamilnadu, Muslims speaking Urdu and those speaking Tamil are staying aloof and disconnected. Muhallas operate as isolated islands. There should be amicable understanding between Melapalayam and Ambur. Ilayankudi and Melvisharam should join hands in political domain.
Islamic preachers from Urdu should be introduced in Tamil Muhallas. Translated materials should flourish. It is essential to have Urdu-Tamil connect to survive and shine in religion, politics, economy, education and maintain influence.

History Of Murder Of Language

Speech by Dr. Fathima from Osmania Univesity at a conference organized by Madras University Urdu Department, Tamilnadu Urdu Academy and Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam.
Published in Muslim Murasu, September 2011

Language gives identity to a person. Knowledge percolates from brain into the heart by education in mother tongue. This is a thought acknowledged by scholars globally. This is the only way character can be built.
Obstacles are created for the growth of Hindustani language since Independence. The idea that Urdu does not belong here is spread. Impediments are erected with such vicious attitude. When students are available in schools, teachers are missing. The root of the language is weakened. But the inherent capacity of a language can tide it over such hostile situation. Even after 60 years, the status and position of the ruler’s language is there for everyone to see. Even after thousand years, Urdu has not only maintained its influence in India, but held its head high internationally. Jashne Faiz was successfully organized in countries like New Zealand and Australia. International Urdu conferences are held in different countries like America, Canada and India. Urdu has proved to be the language of people for all times.
Urdu traveled a journey of 300 years in just 30 years between 1918 and 1948. Education in all streams including medicine and engineering was imparted in Urdu in Jamia Osmania University. Students graduating here traveled far abroad and made an impact. There were scientists from Urdu stream doing rounds globally. The situation that ensued was disconcerting.
Now school students from Urdu schools fare among state level toppers in Maharashtra. They are demonstrating the value of education in mother tongue. Other states can follow Maharashtra.
Urdu has not lost any ground in media, advertisement and film industry. In this marketing era, advertisements for apparels, detergents and refreshments are echoing popularity of Urdu.
After 1948, English became official language in Osmania university. This brought stagnation. A fresh lease of live was given with founding of Maulana Azad National Urdu University. At long last, rulers realized the importance. Now M.B.A and M.C.A can be pursued in Urdu medium. If Urdu medium education had been accepted even after 1948, Muslim community would have developed leaps and bounds.
This is technology era. But students at University level are not conversant even in one language. Language is essential to live as humans. Two language policy is yielding negative results.
Central and state governments are doing their bit. We have to do our part. Urdu medium education, education in mother tongue, is missing. Tree is available, flowers and fruits are available. But roots are snapped. Schools and colleges are left to die. Teachers are not appointed. There are eight students in a University. They are demanding atleast 15 or 20. Intimacy with language went down after partition. Adherent culture was terribly affected. Urdu is host to most number of Islamic books and works. If Urdu disappears, it will take Islamic values down with it. Immigrants in America are sending cheques for the death of their mothers. Some charity organization is taking care of last rites. Mother tongue will impart values and culture. Humane values, love for others and good virtues should be taught to next generation beginning from when they are five years old. Let us not crave for everything that is English. We are failing in our duty to groom human beings. Our language will teach and thrust good values. A Muslim entrepreneur is willing to donate 200 crore rupees for pollution control (C.E.P). Graduates are not enough. We need human beings. This is a democratic country and we need to knock the doors of the government. Government is not doing enough for language development. Mamta Banerjee is helping Madrasas. Demands should be strengthened in Tamilnadu as well. Language till tenth standard forms bulk of what one learns. Knowledge obtained from college is relatively less.

Who Should Rule

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan speech
Published in Muslim Murasu, September 2011

Man is created as Kalipha is the view of Quran. The dictionary meaning of Kalipha is successor. One who replaces the previous one. One incident follows the next. This is how human history proceeds. One king is replaced by another. Jinns lived on earth at some point of time. Then man took over the reins. To my knowledge, Jinns do not have successors. Iblis is leader of Jinns. There is no concept of Kilaphat or offspring there. But man will have offspring. One will pass away and another will take that place.
Man does not live forever. This applies both to individual and society. Leadership and position will change. Man is master of earth. Man decides the course of history.
Surah 3, verse 140, “Such days (of varying fortunes) We give to men and men by turns”. Ownership of earth will keep changing hands. No one has been given monopoly in this matter.
This is the philosophy of history in the light of Quran. This has been proved repeatedly. We have past 4000 years of history recorded. Roman empire ruled the world for 2000 years till seventh century. There were small tribes before that and they were quarreling most of the time. Romans brought a huge part of land under one rule for the first time and brought a semblance of peace, albeit forced peace.
Then came the Islamic rule. It was followed by British rule and American era of late. There will be stirrings in human life. It should not stagnate. When a new ruler comes, they take the world a step further. Each rule will start stagnating and then deteriorating after some time. Allah’s will is to bring new talents and new achievers.
During Muslim rule, education was made common for all and people were given freedom. Earlier education had been restricted to people belonging to select classes. There was peace in Roman rule, but it lacked freedom. A common man had no rights to question or advise the ruler. There was nature worship in those times. Muslims stopped nature worshiping. It laid foundation for modern science. Muslims conquered and harnessed nature. Then Muslims started stagnating.
This brought British rule. They brought technology with them. Human labor was replaced with machines. Machines were used for energy instead of cattle. They generated energy from water and steam. World saw new developments with these innovations. Allah gave dominance to Europeans.
Then America became super power. Their achievement was communication breakthroughs. The concept of global village was introduced by them. Now America has started deteriorating.
On a smaller scale, Jews have been given the reign. Contribution of Jews in documenting history by archaeological surveys is huge. Muslims are harboring intense hatred towards Jews. It is Jews who gave historical perspective to many incidents narrated in Quran through their archaeological works. They unearthed a whole city where Prophet Ibrahim had lived, during their excavation works in Iraq. Many relics from the period of Prophet Ibrahim were found. This is the result of stupendous work done by Jews. Another huge contribution by this community is dry-land irrigation. When conventional flood irrigation failed in desert landscape, they invented drip irrigation. Through this they achieved good harvest in desert terrain.
Allah will eliminate a society when it stagnates. Stagnant water is prone to germs. Running water and currents in water will keep it fresh and useful. Society will keep changing and continue improving.
Muslims are continuously harboring negative and counter-productive thoughts. They believe they and only they have the right to rule this world for no reason. Kilaphat is part of freedom; it is not part of Imaan (faith). Whoever takes the world further gets the right to rule. Muslims are fighting against Allah’s will.

Death Is A Bridge

Darse Quran by Maulana Rizwan Pasha Quadri at Masjide Shujath, Tolichowki, Hyderabad
Published in Muslim Murasu, September 2011

Surah AlaImran, Rukoo 17, this is Quran’s biggest Rukoo.
Initial verses bring home some realities about death. Subsequent verses draw our attention towards how Prophet was sent as a huge mercy to believers and how he was immensely kind and affectionate.
“O ye who believe! Be not like the unbelievers”. There were many hypocrites in Madinah in those days. They raised concern about Prophet’s companions and warriors getting killed in battles. They are ruining their lives and are running into a certain death. This was the question they raised and created confusion in the minds of the city dwellers and caused distress to the family members of the martyrs. They inspired fear and yearnings in their hearts.
Let us understand the truth. If Allah desires to protect someone, no one will be able to kill him. If it were Allah’s Will that a person must die, then staying safe in Madinah far from the battlefield is not going to save him. We see many such incidents in our day-to-day life. Small kids are rescued safely amidst the ruins of tsunami disaster. There are people who slip from train and stay alive. There are also people who slip from foot-stairs and die. Life and death are in Allah’s hands.
Moomin believes this. Death will follow you wherever you go. Even if you take refuge in fortified palace, death will conquer you. Government, medical experts or any other force will appear hopeless. Allah sees well all that you do. If you are slain or die in the path of Allah, you won’t be in loss.
Allah promises two favors, Makfirath (forgiveness) and Rahmath (mercy). These are far better than all that a man could amass. A person bestowed with mercy will find peace in life even in poor conditions. A person lacking God’s mercy won’t have a peaceful life even if he is rich with wealth.
If you die or are slain, you will be brought unto God. A faithful person’s soul (Rooh) will be covered in silk cloth with fragrant odor. It will be taken past all the seven skies and it will see God without any veil. At once it will fall in Sajda (prostration). God will say that His slave has shown his love for Him. And He will tell angels to take the soul back to grave. Prophet informs that at the same time when we are burying the body in the grave, angels will be injecting soul in the body. Allah will glorify His slave with such honor.
We celebrate when spiritual elders pass away. Usual tradition in world is to offer condolences and observe silence during death anniversaries. But Muslims will arrange lights, apply perfumes, distribute Sarbath and create a joyful atmosphere. Some struggle to understand this.
Why do we celebrate death. It is the day when the soul sees its Lord. It is auspicious, blissful time. Prophet informs in a Hadees, “Death is a bridge that connects two friends”. Devout people do not fear death. They expect it eagerly. This is how Fathima (ral) died. She took bath, wore new clothes and went to bed facing Kibla. She told Ali (ral) that bathing is not needed, she can be directly buried. She pulled bedsheet over her face. She departed in a short while. There was no fear or regrets. There won’t be any pain. Such people don’t have their hearts in this world. They wait eagerly to meet Rasoolullah, Allah and Akhirat. Death will be easy for believers. It will be death for a short while. Later they will meet God amid celebrations and felicitations. They will be given a new life.
There are many incidents recorded in history. We hear about Salaam being heard from graves. I was studying in Madrasa in nineties. Mosque expansion was going on at that time. Some adjacent graves were dug and leveled. Some graves were as many as 400 years old but bodies in them were intact without deterioration. When Hafiz dies, Allah will ask earth will it eat Hafiz body. Earth will reply in negative. The case and place where Quran is kept is considered sacred. Hafiz have Quran in their hearts. They won’t be destroyed.
It is part of the Mercy of God that Prophet was very kind and soft-natured. His tenderness was beyond any comparison. Ayisha (ral) testifies that Prophet never took any revenge for personal reasons. He will give apt reply when God’s commands are disobeyed. But there won’t be any selfish angle to it. If he were harsh hearted, people won’t be circling around him. When he walked in the streets, plenty of them will accompany him. Many will sit with him when he sits. Even children will mix freely with our Holy Prophet. This is God’s mercy that He made our Prophet very kind. ‘Galeez’ word has been used in this verse. In Arabic, it means ‘harsh’. Prophet was not harsh. He faced insufferable tortures in the early days of his mission, but never once did he give a harsh reply.
Ikrama is Abu Jahl’s son. Ummu Hakeem was his wife. She embraced Islam and moved to Madinah. She reported to Prophet about her husband’s idea to elope to Yemen. Prophet forgave Ikrama who actively involved in many battles against him. When Ikrama visited Prophet at the behest of his wife, Prophet stood up and gave him a warm welcome saying “Marhaba! Marhaba!” and hugged him. Ikrama realized his folly and pronounced kalima. Prophet was in touch with five lakh people. Thousands of them used to meet him, greet him and travel with him on a daily basis. This was possible because of Prophet’s sweet temper.
Hinda is Abu Sufyan’s wife. She is Grandmother of Yajeed. After Prophet won over Meccah, Abu Sufyan and Hinda met him and sought forgiveness. Cruel death of Hamza came to Prophet’s mind. Hinda had mangled Prophet’s uncle Hamza’s body in Uhud battle. Prophet forgave her in spite of that. When Prophet’s daugher Jainab was traveling from Meccah to Medinah, her camel was attacked and she fell down and got badly injured. This caused her death after being nearly one month in bed. The person who attacked her later accepted Islam. Prophet announced that no animosity should be shown to this person for killing Jainab. Prophet was incredibly merciful.
Shamama was took as a war prisoner and kept in Masjide Nabavi. First day Shamama implored Prophet, “I will give money. Release me. You are merciful”. Second day also he said the same. When Prophet inquired him on the third day, Shamama told him, “Treat me in whatever way that pleases you”. Prophet smiled and asked him to be set free. After some time Shamama appeared before Prophet in new dress, pronounced kalima and accepted Islam.
Prophet was kind beyond comprehension even to his foes. He was even more kind to his companions. Moomin should not display grouchy behavior.
Allah told Prophet to pray for the forgiveness of his companions. Allah has made Prophet as Vaseela (means). Allah further commands Prophet to consult (Mashoora) his companions in different affairs. It is Moomin quality to take advices and suggestions from others. Even while constructing house, it is wise to take suggestions from sons and daughters. It is actually to take them into confidence. Prophet solicited suggestions from his companions in every battle. Once a decision is taken, put entire trust in God. Decisions should be based on consultations. First tie your camel, then believe God for its safety. One should not abandon planning and working. But trust should be in God for the results. The verse continues with, “God loves those who put their trust (in Him)”. Moomin will never assert that this is result of my talent, hard work, this is my achievement. This is God’s mercy. Praise for God and thanks to God should always be on one’s lips. If Allah helps you, none can overcome you. If He forsakes you, there won’t be anyone to help.
Some things were found to be missing while spoils of Badr battle were accounted for. Some miscreants raised suspicion on Prophet that he had misappropriated some materials. Allah sent down this verse. “No Prophet could be false to his trust. If any person is so false, he shall, on the day of judgement, restore what he misappropriated”. One who desires Allah’s pleasure won’t act like one who draws Allah’s wrath on him.

Rahman Raheem Meaning

Maulana Peerzada Syed Aleemisha Aamiri speech
Published in Muslim Murasu, September 2011

The Quran verse starts by referring to an attribute of Allah. “ArRahman allamal Quran”. “Most Gracious. It is He Who has taught Quran”. Instead of mentioning God’s name, one of His aspects has been mentioned.
Let us understand who is Rahman. Rahman is He Who teaches Quran. ‘Rahman’ is intensive, superlative form. It means maximum, incomparable gracefulness. To teach Quran is the biggest mercy of all the mercies from God. Health, wealth, relations, power and influence, these are small and insignificant when compared to Quran.
Quran begins by referring to this Rahmaniyath attribute of God. This is the foremost and most important attribute. Whenever God comes in contact with creations, He presents Himself as Rahman. He gives His address and details. “ArRahman alal arshistava”. Allah has established His throne in Arsh. Our faith is that Allah is in Arsh. But He also reveals that ‘ArRahman fas al bihi kabeera’. Learn about Him from those who already know. There are Sufis and spiritually exalted people living in the locality. Learn spirituality from them. God has revealed Himself and His attributes all over Quran. But still it is imperative to surrender and learn about Him from few gifted people.
Whether God is angry or He is pleased, the first attribute that He will display is Rahmaniyat. Whether a person is put in hell or in heaven, God will always be graceful to him. The Rahmaniyat quality is eternal, it won’t wane or change. It is a merciful quality to learn and teach Quran.
Quran is a mirror that will reflect our Holy Prophet. When Gabriel asked Prophet to read, Prophet replied saying he does not read. Gabriel insisted for the second time. Again Prophet replied, “ma ana bikarri”. Prophet is not a Kaari (one who reads Quran). He is Quran. Quran reveals his character, attributes, behavior, conversations, negotiations, discipline, humility and intellect. Prophet’s internal and external aspects are displayed in Quran. “Inna nahnu nazzalna zikra va inna lahu lahaafizoon”. We sent this down and We will protect it. There are no Hafiz (one who has memorized a book) for previous Sacred Texts. But there are numerous Hafiz for Quran.
Rahman and Raheem are two different aspects. Man is provided with hearing, sight, smelling and sensing abilities, various facilities, wealth, knowledge and authority. Even a person who is sent to hell will have different senses functioning for him. God’s mercy will be extended to everyone impartially in this world. Raheem aspect is for those who do good. People having faith and fear of God will be rewarded in the next life. God has life. He gives life. He is merciful. He bestows His mercy. Hafiz each should create many Hafiz. Each Aalim should create hundreds of Aalims. Quran is alive in heart. Quran is Allah’s words, His conversation and command. Allah is Kadeem. Kadeem means that which has existed forever and will exist forever. Allah is Kadeem and so are His sifath (attributes).
Surah ‘Fatiha’ means that which opens or reveals. One who understands Fatiha will be able to understand remaining Quran. Fatiha contains essence of Quran. It is Quran said briefly. Remaining verses in Quran are commentary to this Surah. 6666 verses are contained in these seven verses. Man is also made of seven qualities namely hayaath, ilm, iradha, samaa, basarath, kudrath and kalaam.
Surah Fatiha is mandatory in all Namaz (worship). Only namaz where this Surah is not recited is Janaza namaz. It is actually a dua (prayer), not namaz.
All of Allah’s 99 names can be broadly categorized either as Rahman or Raheem. Who is God? A common answer that can be given to both believer and non-believer is that God is Gracious and Merciful. He nurtures even those who reject and are against Him. He is common to both good and bad people. That is the reason Allah starts revelation with Rahman and Raheem attributes.
